Abstract
Managers face several ethical dilemmas while deciding on the right path or course of action. There are several ethical theories that they can fall back on to resolve such ethical dilemmas. Much of the practice of strategy and ethics in business is also drawn from the past. The literature of the past therefore provides a vast playground for learning many areas, including ethics.
This case study explores two negotiations prior to the ‘great’ war, which is part of the narration in the ancient Indian epic – the Mahabharata. It explores the behavior and decisions of three important kings – Shalya, Duryodhana, and Yudhishtira, in a pre-war negotiation for alliances. The discussions and decisions highlight the complexity of the ethical landscape and its interplay with decision making in the war strategy.
This case study can be used to teach many topics in the course, Business Ethics and Corporate Governance: morality, objectives of ethics, views on ethics in relation to business, stages in ethical consciousness, ethical decision making model, and ethical approaches to managing strategy.
